Andrew's design for the Villa at St Michel transforms a urban residence into a personal Japanese onsen retreat, crafting a sanctuary of tranquility and natural harmony. Spatial Narrative: The design immerses inhabitants in a resort-like experience through authentic elements. A central feature is the extensive use of Japanese solid wood “kumiko”panels, with thematic patterns flowing throughout the spaces: "Sun and Mountain" in the living & dining area, "Starry Sky" in the child's room, "Bamboo Forest and Mountain" in the master suite, creating three different layered natural aesthetic. Key Features & Atmosphere: The living area is defined by a sloped ceiling reminiscent of a countryside lodge, while sliding “shoji” screensoffer flexible privacy for the tatami mat tea room. A commitment to authenticity is seen in the Japanese-imported wooden soaking tub and the use of translucent washi fiberboard to diffuse harsh western sunlight in the dining area. This project masterfully balances form and function. With fully concealed storage maintaining visual purity, the home achieves a seamless blend of natural materials and modern convenience, offering a deeply immersive and restorative escape into the heart of Japanese design. Also translates the essence of Japanese Zen into the design unit, bringing an authentic aesthetic to Hong Kong. It invites a broader audience to discover the life philosophy hidden within each creation and to experience the beauty of a calm, simplified lifestyle.
